As a kid i understood the need for the French to go and stay nuclear. I think it worked well for Western Europe during the Cold War. If the russians ever felt we were a paper tiger and became aggressive, they had the french targetting moscow to contend with. This is why a US guarantee of the Arabs from Iranian encroachment might not be enough. What we need now is not Lawrence but DeGaulle of Arabia--someone who can protect them against nuke armed iran as well as strike a deal with israel and settle that bs once and for all.
