I think it is more the "store of value" rather than a currecny backing.

Hmmm.. so is my mattress.. and neither pay me any interest.

And Ron Paul has other ideas. He thinks we should return to the Gold Standard, where all money is effectively exchangable for a set amount of gold.

And btw, what kind of storehouse of value was the shiny yellow metal for those who bought it at $800/ounce back in the early '80s?? They missed the greatest stock market rise in our history.. And I remember well just a few years back when people were suffering with $250/ounce gold.

You want a storehouse of value?.. buy real estate (preferably the land itself). But be prepared to pay property taxes.

But if you insist on playing with the shiny metal, then at least buy the gold mining stocks. At least you can short them when you think gold has reached a price peak.
