He apprenticed in a jewelry store, that true to the stereotype, was run by European jews. They liked to talk amongst themselves in Yiddish, when my father claims to have been able to follow with few problems. That is, until the day he decided to join in the conversation... At which point, they're Yiddish became pig latin. Funny story. People who speak another language always think they are getting away with something. I would have like to see the look on their faces when your father started speaking German/Yiddish to them.
