ManyMoose, That may be the difference. I had lived at sea level all my life until I came here (5000 feet) seven years ago. I still have not acclimated.

Docs here are as likely to tell their tourist patients to get themselves back to sea level as to tell them to quit smoking.

All kinds of medical conditions (many fatal) are hazards at the tremendous elevations of the Himalayas and Mt. Everest, etc. Permanent blindness is another real hazard.

Altitude sickness is frequently discussed on my critical care listserv. I'll try to come up with some cites, if you like, which currently reside on another computer. - Holly
