You don't understand the point of a smear campaign. The point is to get your opponent to deny something. If Kerry had taken that bait he'd have been stupid. Rovian logic says to call your opponent everything under the sun, no matter how untrue, then pressure him to try and deny it. Because nobody really believes politicians who deny things.

Like Tommy Franks said, if someone had attacked his Nam combat record, he'd have no way to absolutely prove anything. It wasn't like news crews were following them around with video cameras. If one liar claims you did something you didn't do it's his word against yours.

But of course we know the Bushie smearvets had never claimed any of their trash before, just made it up for the election 30 years later.
