I have just read a good exposition of Calvinism in an excellent historial novel called "The Rebels of Ireland." Michener did a wonderful job of showing how believing in it works out in "Hawaii."

I vividly remember, as a 12-year-old, walking out of a Presbyterian Sunday school after the teacher explained predestination and saying to myself, "Christianity is not for me!" It was the picture of a "gurgling babe in a cradle already predestined by God for an eternity of writhing and roasting in hellfire," as Ingersoll used to describe it, that got me.
