I did not get lonesome. I was used to being alone in the woods, and my buddy was only ten miles away on another lookout.

Here's a typical conversation between me and him.

"Diablo, 10-8." (I turned on my radio, and I'm active.)

"Hidden, 10-8." (He turned on his, and is active.)

"Diablo, Hidden. 10-33?" (What time is it?)

"Hidden, Diablo. 0630" (6:30 am.)

"Diablo, Hidden. 10-4." (OK, thanks)

When we came down from the lookouts, we were so used to talking in code we couldn't stop for another week, especially on the phone.

I used the radio very concisely my whole career owing to this early requirement to keep the airway clear. Later, young people started yakking on the radio and it really bothered me. I wanted to tell them to stuff a potato in their mouth.

We also had a four code, which was specific to fires and woods business.

Thanks for that link. I didn't have that one. A lot of old lookouts are being rented out these days. It's a sad thing for me, but they simply aren't needed much for fire detection any more. That fate is a LOT better than having them ignominiously burned to the ground like many were by thoughtless managers. I would rather have them moulder away peacefully.
