Higher rates are necessary to stem inflation... have you noticed the rising cost of energy lately? A homeowner shouldn't overextend himself in the first place... the economy has up and down cycles, Bush inherited a recession and we've pulled out of it very nicely to the point of our economy heating up a bit... ergo, higher rates to slow things down a bit... it will also help strengthen the U.S. Dollar, so don't worry about the devaluation issue...

That's happened in my area. People now have higher incomes and are jumping from the $150k homes to $350k homes. They can make the higher payments even though the mortgages are way higher.
