Here's a VERY GOOD book and commentary on the "Tao de Ching"- Lao Tzu:

<The Chinese boxing styles which predated the introduction of Buddhism to China, are quite likely Taoist in philosophical orientation>

FWIW, it's my understanding that Da Mo (BODIDHARMA) brought "Qi-Gong" from India to China because he saw the Monks wasting away form long hours of meditation and sedintary ways. My understanding is that the Taoists developed powerful heath and longevity practices that were sometimes used for Martial arts when those that held the secrets felt it necessary. In periods where 'bad' emperors or rulers were in power, the 'wizards' passed along the secrets to just a few pupils and hid them from negative governments... waiting till conditions were right to teach it out again.

So often, the martial artists were actually fairly low level 'energy workers'...as truly enlightened sages refrained (saw no reason to) from using their talents in this way.
