Circular logic, you have to admit. The job of campaigns is to be a bit further ahead of the curve than that.

Being ahead of the curve means having Lee Atwater's understanding how Dukakis could be reduced to midget status. Or just figuring that Mondale was too tied to a tired old Carter image to make a dent in Reagan.

As for 1992 - when the smallish northeastern liberal went down in flames in 1988, is it that hard to figure out that a charismatic southern governor might have a better chance than another northeastern Senator?

Gore - you just need some sense as to what constitutes an appealing politician vs. a plastic Washington product.....like Hillary.

Most important lesson for the Dems to be learned - what are the tough questions they need to ask before they nominate someone to get mowed down yet again?

Exactly one Democratic nominee has won since 1980. What do you think we could learn from the rest?
