it's less about the political location than about the personal charm of the candidate. We are fickle people right now.

You are getting around to my point. Take the timeframe back further and ask yourself why the Dems who won did:

--JFK - charisma over substance. Narrow win at that.

--LBJ - a personality writ large. Not hard to take the center vs. an overt extremist.

--Carter - another southerner with a charismatic message, even if it went wrong after a while.

--Clinton - a southerner with charisma and ideas that touched a chord.

All the rest? Losers. Nobody else has won as a Democrat since Harry Truman (another razor-thin margin).

My point - nominating relatively decent party standard-bearers doesn't work. It loses. Over and over and over.

Another compromise candidate with 40% negatives doesn't strike me as a great idea.
