If Gore had won by 500 votes I wouldn't say he was an important charismatic winner. Odds are he would have been tossed out on his butt by a Rove-Cheney candidate in 2004. Ditto Kerry.

You mix up important points when you talk about Bush governing as if it were 55-45. That is very true. It also applies to any Democrat who wins 51-49.

And my argument with you is that it's not clear going to the center is the answer.

"Going to the center" is a slogan. If you have truth on one side and falsehood on the other, going to the center will give you half truth.

What is wrong with searching for truth?

Does everything have to be compromised?

I guess if you don't have the ability to find the truth, straddling the middle is better than committing to one side or the other.
