Egalitarianism was the subject of a recent study. It found that egalitarianism emerges in humans by 18 months. Toddlers would go out of their way to pick something "accidentally" dropped by researchers. They were much less likely to help if it was obviously dropped intentionally. If we can get government out of the charity business, people are likely to reemerge as direct sources for aid. On the Great Plains people like my great grandparents used to barter at times. People who had nothing could get nothing, but those willing to put forth the effort would get what they needed. That is part of the spirit that made this country great.
