It wasn't that bad. They kept it moving with lots of clips from old movies, but the awards can't succeed if people don't care about the movies and the actors that are up for awards.

Clooney was the only actor with a little bit of the old charisma, emphasis on the "little bit," so the awards rang hallow.

It wasn't 1939, but it wasn't the 70's or 80's either. As a member of the audience, we have to have seen a movie we really liked, or a performance by one of our favorite actors, to really be involved in the Academy Awards.

I feel like Gloria Swanson saying this, but when we were kids, they really had stars. They really had movies, too.

It's all gone. Or going. Digital is coming in, sweeping away film, and maybe, just maybe, the majors are threatened with the loss of control over distribution due to downloads.

I can't believe the latter, but maybe Hollywood will have to be competitive. That would really kill them.
