Ted, Plus, we need to care what's going on in the rest of the world, because conditions are very bad, and that could hurt us in the future.

I agree, but how do you think this ought to be resolved? If some guy stole your Beamer because he was jealous you could afford one and he couldn't, would you throw the guy in jail or give him a lump sum of money so that he could buy a Beamer of his own?

I think there is a better analogy. IMO we need to promote the aspects of our culture that would be most beneficial to other cultures.........such aspects as a stabile currency; expansion of capital, higher education, improved agriculture, political stability, etc....anything that has contributed to the success of the American economic model. To overcome opposition, I would suggest that we use the carrot method........offering aid so long as they work to comply with the other conditions that I listed. I would suggest we find one or two countries in each region of the world that have a likelihood of succeeding and work with them until such point as they do succeed.

Humans often learn by modeling and nothing sells like success. The eastern Eastern European countries are working feverishly to catch up to their western Eastern European counterparts after seeing their economic successes. I think the same would be true if we helped certain countries in each region of the world move to a successful economic model.

If we don't get the rest of the world closer to our level of living standard, I foresee serious and growing problems down the road between the haves and the have nots.
