The condos you are talking about much have been better than these, seriously. These were RIGHT NEXT DOOR to thousands of other rentals. Sure the conversion had some cosmetic upgrades which looked very nice while the builder was selling the units. Three years later there wasn't much of a difference.

Those that bought *quality* property in that period were fine. But the problem then was that a whole lot of buyers couldn't get "in". They felt like they had to buy anything- whatever they could get. Those at the bottom regretted it.

Was there really that big a frenzy of speculators in the 70's? Can't imagine any mania was ever like today. Even the late 80's boom is only a shell of this ponzi scheme in bubble markets..
