I own quite a lot of CEF but because of tax considerations do not hold GLD and likely will not hold the silver ETF either.

The hardcore bugs don't like the ETFs and I understand some of their reasons. However, as you say, they are a very convenient way to securely hold PMs without all the associated hassle and lack of liquidity. This is why I originally went with CEF and will continue to do so.
