Only one side of Diablo was scary. The other sides were ground level (but the ground was rocky, if you fell).

Washing windows on a lookout takes a LONG time. You can't tell which side of the window the streak is on.

Some people on lookout towers have lost their dogs, whose exuberance overcomes their caution on the catwalk. They race around and can't stop at the corner. I also knew of a young woman who fell to her death.

I was glad my lookout didn't have a tower. I get a little vertigo when I go up long staircases like that.

Here's a little funny I wrote a year or so ago:

Liz on Lookout

A tower stands in the forest lands
Atop a mountain peak
Lived all alone upon this throne
A pair of eyes to seek

Her name was Liz and it was her biz
To scan the slopes for smoke
Between her looks she read her books
But then one day she broke

"It's all around and up and down
"All windows but no walls
"I cannot bear to climb the stair
"Each time Ma Nature calls."

The lookout plan is for a man
To stand and point a-lee
And there ain't no way to this very day
For a lookout gal to pee.
