Thanks! I figure it will be about 3.5 years before SI hits 33,333,333 hits. With a Trimble clock, that should be easy to pinpoint.

I find the technology to be very fascinating and clever. And we owe it all to Sputnik. (Because Sputnik started the space race.)

My Alaska project depended heavily on Trimble receivers. We had to get a fix out in a muskeg or someplace where we could pick up at least three satellites, preferably four for elevation. Under the timber canopy, it was difficult to get more than two at a time.

My son had a consumer GPS. We went over a pass together and saw a sign that gave the elevation. I mentioned that the GPS was only five feet off. My son pointed out that the receiver was almost five feet off the ground on his dashboard. I was impressed.

Now he has an improved system that calculates a route from where you are to where you want to go, and tells you when to turn.

I never get out of sight of my compass. If you need GPS to find your way out of the woods, you shouldn't be out that far.
