Some random tidbits from the Sprint presentation...IMO, the Barry West presentation on their technology evolution is worth a listen.

sprint.com

- They see themselves as leading the industry into 4G. They think their technology selection could have an impact worldwide.

- Some of their comments seemed to indicate that they hope to have their 4G technology have greater scale than they have had previously. This would probably be a big advantage for either WiMAX or 3G LTE.

- The focus in on cost per bit. This was what West always harped on when Nextel was trialing Flarion.

- They have a slide that shows some of their potential technology choices. Flarion, 3G LTE, Mobile WiMax, and TD-CDMA (IP Wireless) are all listed around MultiCarrier DO. He went over some of the strengths and weakness of each technology and then just sort of glossed over MultiCarrier DO by saying...."we'll get that anyway". It looks like DOrB is a "no-brainer" for Sprint.

- They fact that Qualcomm bought Flarion solved their previous worries about the F-OFDM value chain.

- Mentioned IPR problems with WiMax.

- He talked about the fact that they will focus their 4G rollout basically on hot spots with their devices falling back to DO everywhere else.

Sprint might be the best positioned company for 4G in the world. They have 50,000 base stations and almost 100MHz of spectrum in a band that is still pretty good for wide area coverage....and yet, even they see themselves relying on dual-mode handsets.

CDMA modes are going to be required in handsets for a VERY long time to come.
