ok. lets go to the bottom line - why conroe is going to be so cheap? I can not imagine intel offering such a magnificent performance at 1/3 of amd's price

eracer,

The mp3 file is going to be several times smaller than the original wav file. An 800MB WAV file would only be slightly larger than a full CDs worth of music, which would be a relevent file size to test for anyone interested in ripping CDs to their MP3 player.

I think the speed of the CD drive would be a more important variable here.

that explains it! It's music for the... whales!
(1) their audible frequency range is greater
(2) their songs are longer.
and the buggers take a whale-size mp3 file. See for yourself:

I'd rather wait for a comparison where the tester wasn't always wondering if there was something fishy about the whole thing. I just don't like data of uncertain quality. Although I must say that the numbers look nice.

Eracer:

Name one standard CD-ROM that has 800MB on it. The only ones that could are beyond any standard size having over 90min on them. Most CD burners can't handle that size. So its not a valid test, but what else is new. Intel couldn't make a straight benchmark, if their life depended on it. You have to take a ton of salt with anything they had their mitts on. They are like MS doing benching Windows against a Linux box, it just smells rotten.

Pete

PS: Conroe shouldn't need special software to work. A64/FX/X2 doesn't. If it was good enough for FX60 to use a 2003 Phoenix BIOS (shown in screen shot), then Conroe should have used a 2003 Phoenix BIOS. The same with video drivers. It should have been a well known flavor of ATI Official drivers used in both boxes, not some special knockoff.
