Statement on Proposed Bush Cuts from Kathy Lewis, President and CEO, Christopher Reeve Foundation

The Christopher Reeve Foundation is deeply disappointed that the President proposed a cut in funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in his budget for Fiscal Year 2007. At a time when health promotion and quality of life programs are reaping the return on our sustained investment in the fight against paralysis, these cuts eliminate funding for CDC paralysis programs, which fund the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Resource Center (PRC), rehabilitation-based therapy programs and Quality of Life Health Promotion Grants to non-profit organizations around the country.

The PRC's goal is to help all members of the paralysis community discover the resources they need to stay as healthy, active and independent as possible. However, this budget fails to meet the basic public health needs for Americans living with paralysis.

We understand the financial problems facing this country. However, turning our attention to a growing deficit does not require that we turn our backs on people living with paralysis, their families and caregivers. The Christopher Reeve Foundation is calling on lawmakers to oppose the President's proposed cuts and to “take a stand for your constituents who can’t” by supporting increased funding for the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Resource Center, including its Quality of Life grants, the NeuroRecovery Network, paralysis programs and medical research.

We hope our supporters will join the Christopher Reeve Action Network and actively work to ensure the federal budget includes increased funding for these programs. The Christopher Reeve Foundation is steadfast in its goal of changing the world of paralysis. We remain committed to improving the lives of millions living with paralysis and to seeing Christopher and Dana’s vision become reality.
