Re: 1) On what benchmarks does Conroe have an advantage over AMD's current (non-overclocked) parts and what is the extent of that advantage? The uncertainty is based on BIOS/driver/setup issues and the extremely small sample of mostly single-core benchmarks. Why didn't they at least throw in MM Content Creation or something?

An extremely small sample would be two or three benchmarks. I thought the benchmark count was quite generous considering how far out Conroe is. Looking at Anandtech and Hexus there were at least eight benchmarks available, and the reviewers were free to change the benchmark settings to some degree.

2) When will Conroe & its chipsets be available in quantity? July is one thing. October is another. If OEMs are not totally convinced by mid October, they won't build 'em for Christmas.

If Intel launches them in October it is almost a sure bet large OEMs like Dell and HP will have them in stock right away.

5) How long will Conroe be available before K8L? The lead, if there is one, might evaporate in a few months. I would predict that a solid 10% overall performance lead for 3 months would not reduce AMD's market share by 1 point. (Remember how AMD's market share barely budged for a year and a half after Opteron and Athlon 64 were intro'd.)

While 3 months might not be enough to reduce AMD's marketshare by a point, I believe it would prevent AMD from gaining at least a point of marketshare they otherwise would have had if Conroe didn't launch. Looks like K8L will launch roughly three quarters after Conroe. By mid-2007 Conroe should be selling in the many millions while K8L would take a while to ramp and initially have no noticeable impact on Conroe. By the time K8L production was in full swing by late 2007/early 2008 Intel will probably be introducing 45-nm cores which run cooler and faster.
