UMTS (WCDMA) Handset Sell-In

Hedgie,

<< Weren't there some folks on this board or perhaps the other thread that claimed that 49 million wcdma phones in 05 was unattainable and unrealistic? Could someone set me straight on this.... >>

Perhaps you are talking about QUALCOMM's estimate of WCDMA handsets in 05?

If memory serves me, my own guestimate has been 48 million units sell-in for some time and 98 million for '06.

Of course, going back in time, theere were many who felt that UMTS (WCDMA) was "fatally flawed."

If Nokia makes their target of 40 million WCDMA handsets in '06 and QUALCOMM's estimate of WCDMA units is valid then Nokia will have 46% global share and they'll have 53% of LG's estimate. Of course if QUALCOMM's estimate is valid then Nokia isn't going to sell 40 million units and that is a pretty aggressive target even if sell-in approaches (or exceeds) 100 million units thia year which it should or could.

Best,

- Eric -
