re: Great backdrop for a movie or TV show, but a little exaggerated in reality, don't you think?

re: So conservatives are hypocrites when it comes to material and sexual decadence, while liberals are apologetic or even proud when it comes to that. Either way, the result is the same. Middle Easterners look upon Western society as decadent.

I don't agree with your premise about liberals or conservatives, but do you really think that because they see us a decadent there is going to be a "cultural war"? Don't you think that's a little over the top? People usually fight wars for land or resources.

re: Oil is often portrayed as a narcotic, but in reality it still is the best source of energy that we have. We can certainly learn to conserve and do with less, but in the end, the Middle East still controls vast reserves of the best energy source on this planet. And that's not going to change until we find an energy source that's even better. Or cripple our own economy and our lifestyles.

It's not black and white (jeez, how many times have I said that to you). Hell, we produce a little less than 40% of the oil we use. And we probably waste 60% of what we do use through inefficiency. And it's not a 100% thing, we can still import some of our oil... just not 60%+.

A sure way to "cripple our own economy and lifestyles" is to continue our depencence on foreign oil. Unless you think the one passenger SUV is the centerpiece of our lifestyle and economy.
