There was a feature article in the NYT Sunday Magazine about the guy. He only went through 4th grade but when the Ruskies took over Iraq his family went to Pakistan and he took english there with NGO's and worked his way up to be the Taliban Spokesman to the US. He travelled around defending the Taliban and probably learned a lot.

From the article, it appears that he was in a non-degree program and did ok (B+) so he is now applying to Yale next year as a degree candidate. They must think he brings a perspective to the student body. From his quotes, he seems to admire a lot about the US and also has some problems with the extremes of the Taliban.

Rahmatullah Hashemi is at Yale on "special student status."

Lot of universities admit students with unconventional educational backgrounds, if they're otherwise qualified.

If he's undergrad, he still had to take the SAT; if he's a grad student, the GRE.

I bet his SAT score is higher than yours. ;^)
