I think the "false positives" do bother people in the US government, at least some of those on the military and intellignece side. The policy people may have a different view. Re: Gitmo abuses - While it is certain that some of the detainees are no doubt innocent, and hopefully most of these have been released, many of the others were participants but at a low level, according to the detainees. Some of these are likely to be mid-level people pretending to be very minor participants. Recently saw a documentary on Herman Goering directing the SS offices to pretend to be enlisted men, and providing documentation. One Afghan detainee was a driver for high level Al-Queda decsion makers. That qualifies as being a participant, and not innocent. I don't expect large scale suicides - active measures have been taken, including having many of the detainees on Zoloft, and SSRI anti-depressant. *************** The founders of the US may have been pricipled, by they were also pragmatic - using smallpox to get rid of difficult Natives, borrowing money and not paying it back (at least for a long time) and in some instances, terrorizing (burning occupied houses down) Tory supporters of English rule. Maybe not as creative as the Russian Leninists, or as tough as the Viet Cong, but I don't see putting them on a moral pedastal. That being said, GWB is a real low point. Makes Richard Nixon look really good.

Also, significant fraction of the US electorate believes there is a "Clash of Civilizations" or attack on Western Civilization by Islam - all of Islam, not just "radical Jihadists" This viewpoint is kept out of media and the press, since there is an active war where the US needs Muslim allies. Most of the people who believe this are also smart enough to not makes this view public, except maybe in blogs and similar mediums. They don't worry about innocent Muslims any more than innocent Nazis. ****** I don't agree with this viewpoint, but prehaps I am naive.
