Pat - You've obviously thought this through a lot deeper than I have and the picture you lay out is quite plausible and sensible. On political issues, I try to challenge myself that there is usually a perfectly good explanation for why some group is doing what they are doing, especially if I don't support it, that perfectly explains--to them--why they are doing these things. Then, I try to figure out what it could be...

The world situation makes me think of the old joke, (everything reminds me of a joke,) of the telegram from the Jewish mother to her son, "Start worrying now. Details to follow." -dan

The entire issue is so convoluted none of it makes much sense. The only truth that I can see is the escalating cost of the Iraq invasion, and what the next 'big thing' like Iran and/or that area in general will bring. (to that cost)
Remember what supposedly caused the Soviet Union to crumble?

As a tie in, a little disaster history >

The RMS Titanic design used some of the most advanced technology available at the time,
and the ship was advertized to be unsinkable.
Passengers were reluctant to leave the Titanic, which showed no outward signs of being in imminent danger, that they didn't even want to get on the lifeboats, at first.
It was a great shock when, despite the advanced technology and experienced crew, that it did indeed, sink.
