Under the conditions which slaves lived, only the most strong survived. Others were literally worked to death, or perished during ocean voyages or from poor health care. Some plantations had special breeding programs too which only allowed the best physical specimens to reproduce.

Amazingly sick, huh? But it makes sense that there's a hangover from slavery surviving as a residue in our society. Just look at the way Bushies treated poor blacks during Katrina, and/or the way Bushies stripped blacks of voting rights in Florida 2000. They still don't consider them citizens I guess despite a few Uncle Toms like Condi Rice and Clarence Thomas.
