Intel announced that its next generation Centrino platform, codenamed Santa Rosa, will be introduced in 2007 with one of the highlights of the new platform being Robson cache memory, which could speed up the time needed for booting up the system and launching applications, according to company mobility group general manager Sean Maloney at the ongoing Intel Developer conference at San Francisco.

Santa Rosa will support Microsoft’s new 64-bit operating system (OS) Vista and will feature improved performance through its Merom processor and Crestline chipset. The platform will also support the 802.11n multi input multi output (MIMO) Wi-Fi standard. Maloney noted that the performance per watt of Merom will be three times that of Banias, Intel’s first generation Centrino CPU.

In addition to the improved core-component performances, Intel will introduce Robson cache technology on the Santa Rosa.

This new cache technology, which allows for the storing of some data on NAND flash instead of on the hard disk drive (HDD), is able to speed up the boot up time for the operating system as well as applications. A recent MobileMag report also stated the new cache technology could add an additional 30 minutes to battery life.

Citing roadmap briefings from Intel, sources at Taiwan notebook makers predicted that Santa Rosa will only be available in mid 2007.
