According to economic theory over any time frame the best that anyone can hope to achieve in any investment is the perfect interest rate which is adequately modelled by the average long term rate of Tbonds. One could see this if one realized that one can't expect to get something for nothing. For trading volatility, one strategy is to get out of a losing trade rapidly with limited losses, What constitutes an effective rule determining when "losing" is reached? and wait for the few times you luck into larger gains. There's always luck. That's what separates smart money and dumb money.
