When Christian leaders like Falwell blame America for 9/11 for not being Christian enough, we say he is not representing Christianity. When Christian leaders like Pat Robertson call for God to strike liberal members of the Supreme Court dead, we say his is not representing Christianity. When Christians make loud protests at the funerals of fallen American soldiers because they believe the soldiers deserved to die for not being Christian enough, we say they don't represent Christianity. When Christians bomb abortion clinics and kill doctors, we say they don't represent Christianity. But, when wacko Muslims kill, some of those same people say they DO represent Islam. Clearly, mainstream Muslims are angry. However, their anger is over political events that they correctly or incorrectly deem as anti-Muslim. The cartoon protests tapped into that anger. Do extreme Muslims preach hatred of other religions? Certainly. Do political leaders in Asia and elsewhere cynically cultivate a hatred of America in an attempt to increase their own political power? Absolutely. But, we play right into those hands every time there is an Abu Ghraib or 'collateral damage' (i.e. dead civilians) in Iraq. If we turn around and start to preach that Islam is evil, then we play into OBL hands as he attempt to foment a religious war. Better to focus on the evil men behind the hatred, and the underlying causes.
