As small investors it's a lot cheaper and easier to sell or buy a stock when the market is open. Reporting earnings before or after market hours benefits only institutional investors who have the ability to move large positions regardless of whether the market is open or not.

That said panic benefits no one. Selling of stocks on good news is often a sign of a market top. I certainly found little to fault NSM on their actual earnings.
