UNOCAL wasn't the only organization trying to put a pipeline through Afghanistan, by a long shot. The thing about the Taliban's "treatment of women" is quaint. Everybody outside Central Asia and probably everybody inside as well is afraid of the Taliban because they're crazy blood thirsty religious fanatics. Maybe not so much the Chinese, they're there already and they need oil and they're tough as nails. But if Westerners actually stopped doing business with countries that mistreat women we'd be in serious economic trouble.
