for updating and staying abreast of whatever the laptop is over-kill as far as a portable device is concerned

Wouldn't a Palm or Blackberry type of device be adequate for this purpose?

For staying up2date, you need a device that only needs one hand to be operated.

Some may argue, that a PDA (max 500 gram portable device operated using two hands) is better at showing web pages than a mobile phone (small portable device to be operated with one hand), but people really don't want to watch webpages - they just want information.

The European SMS system has demonstrated, how messaging doesn't need a big screen or a two-hand operated device, and most other content can be reworked for phones in similar ways.

Content that people need on the move, will be available as soon as you can be always online with your portable device, in some way or another, no matter if its a PDA or a phone. It doesn't require a pen, a full keyboard, or a Microsoft OS.

The first wifi enabled phones are there now. Say hello to the world of online content for handheld devices.
