Yes, God punished them for idolatry. However, remember that the people of that time considered that sex for women was only 'natural' if it was strictly for the purposes of procreation. Sex for pleasure, including sex during menstruation or women in dominant positions, was considered 'unnatural'.

Similarly, the issue with male on male sex was that one man would have to be 'unnaturally' passive while the other was dominant.

This passage has more to do with excess than homosexuality. The New Oxford Annotated Bible states:

Although widely read today as a reference to homosexuality, the language of unnatural intercourse was more often used in Paul's day to denote not the orientation of sexual desire, but its immoderate indulgence, which was believed to weaken the body (the due penalty)."
