I'll keep in mind your theory that money is the key to true political popularity. I read something (wish I had the link) that contributions to democrats heading into the 2006 elections were up some sizeable amount....may be true for republicans as well. Can't say. But if the "money" starts to move toward the Dems, we'll see if your theory pans out in November.

As for Bush showing "leadership" in the Ports debacle...nothing could be further from the truth. The White House was first disengaged, then confused, then surprised by the reaction, then antagonistic (veto!), then conciliatory, then wishy/washy). Bush can not, and never did, provide a rational or consistent explanation of why the ports deal was good for America. Forget it being neutral, it has to be good for America to go through. Nobody but the true Bush apologists got on board....congress certainly did not.

Leadership requires something strong, consistent and understandable for people to rally around or get behind. The President almost daily whittles away his former strong points. Now even your hated "mad dog" McCain looks reasonable, not to mention guys like Daschle and Schumer getting the high road on security issues. Good God!
