Good old Nick wasn't the only one. The prevalence of barbarian invasions, plague, and crop failure, as well as the shining light of the "high middle ages" that followed, have left the ignorant (like Rose) with the false impression that post-Roman Europe was mired in a "dark age". Medieval historians have long since debunked that myth.

But Rose would rather pretend the Islamics were "civilized"...
