re: Getting it replaced for free would be nice, but of course you would lose anything you have currently stored on the hard drive. There is no good way (no legal and easy way) to back up the hard drive and then restore it to a new drive.

Better than starting over and paying.

Sure there is. There are reputable Tivo upgraders (like newreleasesvideo.com ) who will transfer your shows to a new harddrive. There's nothing illegal about it.
