One of my good friends is a top operator for Mitt Romney. But Mitt has a few problems. Number one, he is a Mormon. And the Born Gainers (my cousin being one of them) think that Mormons are truly demonic. Who knows why, but that's a fact.

Number two, Mitt is not very genuine. In fact, he deliberately shapes his positions for strategic purposes. Maybe they all do to some extent but he's more obvious than most. Also, he has zero foreign affairs experience.

But the GOP is going to be so badly shaken-up that anything is possible. All the old characters could be discredited. for instance, Frist might be indicted. All the Bushie conservatives could be slimed by Bush's fall. McCain and Guliani could be seen as yesterday's news. And the GOP could be left with no one else. But McCain is still king in terms of winnability. At least at this point.

That said, we may be entering the period of the new democratic majority. Republicans I've been talking to are disgusted by their entire party. So disgusted they may stop voting for a few elections.
