"As I noted last week, "...we find that 67% of the people aged 50-64 saved less than $10,000 last year. Over 40% saved less than $1,000!!!" No wonder that most people expect to work after age 65. "

I get confused over what is the average family. I expect every single woman unmarried with child is included in the average family even if living at home with her parents.

i retired 11 years ago(still fall into 50-64 group). no bank savings, didn't save a dime or contribute to 401k program since retirement, large mortgage, how do i compute into average family? If i use part of 401k savings(existing) it is income but then money left over and invested for following years may not be included again as i already paid taxes on it. So i will fall into a very low income bracket. high mortgage will bring me into the low income bracket.

all my nieces and nephews make little gross income but bought rather modest houses in last ten to 15 years. i can tell you on average those houses have at least tripled in value. I doubt any of them carry a savings account and like me only have a checking account. i never had a savings account other than 401k plan. Didn't see a need to have one if payroll met monthly expenses and any major project or emergency came up i could use credit card or withdrawal for 401k as a loan. then we always had ability to refinance as housing usually grew enough to get out some spendable income and of course taxes encourage having a mortgage.

i assume everyone on welfare come into average family, even if they do not want to work. As the population grows i expect welfare payments will continue to grow. locally jobs are going unfilled in my area. Pay about $10. after a year and companies cannot get workers. I figure that get them to top of average family income without overtime(family of two workers).

just wondering how they compare numbers, stats etc.
