All mammals lost the nucleus in their red blood cells.
Presumably this allows more room for hemoglobin, but in the process the ability to regenerate lost digits was also lost.

I have read informed speculation that junk DNA is a sign that our species went through it's punctuation phase (rapid change) relatively recently. If we encounter a long stretch of equibrium then junk will get jetisoned. It can't all be cleaned out at once or it could create difficulties for chromosomes to line up during sex.
