I agree that the Channel Island Vault while deserving of security, needs inspection now and then. You don't want gov't pawing it to death, but on the other hand you need business security that the trust element is valid. Most account mechanisms that allege to hold things on account, are subject to various fictive practices, and the stability of shuffling of paper is your only backup, with some nod at the CDIC norms in some jurisdictions. This failed to give complete satisfaction with the recent huge debacle at Refco being a case in point. Most government held gold and bank held gold suffers from the same sort of illusion of physical presence. Where it is kept and indeed its accounting, (vis a vis "has it been merely loaned or actually sold forward") is entirely a matter of conjecture.
