The A-bomb protects us because if the aliens invaded we'd have no choice but to set off nuclear warheads. Even though the aliens can easily destroy things like ICBMs probabilities are high that at least some would go off in hidden subterranean silos accidentally. You see, they don't want us to irradiate the earth's surface. They can't tolerate radiation nor all the diseases in our atmosphere, So we have two defenses. The latter is the one of most concern to them. The Prime Directive also is in effect but by the time the Jedi get here some rogue race of grays could have cleaned us out. The Prime Directive works because it protects the advanced races from the primitives.

"Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb"

General Jack D. Ripper: Mandrake, do you recall what Clemenceau once said about war?

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: No, I don't think I do, sir, no.

General Jack D. Ripper: He said war was too important to be left to the generals. When he said that, 50 years ago, he might have been right. But today, war is too important to be left to politicians. They have neither the time, the training, nor the inclination for strategic thought. I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.
