That is what I concluded as well. The price cuts are to slow down or prevent more market share loss to AMD, rather than a serious effort to regain any signficant market share back from AMD.

BTW AMD is increasing pricing on some of their products in response to Intel. In order for intel to hit when it hurts amd (retail) intel would have to pay to OEMs to use intel's chips.

I disagree with you to some extent. When I walk through Best Buy I see that Intel systems on display typically sell for more than their AMD counterparts. Intel systems priced the same or a bit lower than AMD's would almost certainly generate more interest for Intel systems.

In servers and high end workstations few hundred dollars would not make any difference at all.

I believe it would make little difference as well.
