j3pflynn, on AMD processor supply

The trouble is, they've won all those sockets, and they want to keep their customers happy with the CPU supply. Even the idea of making higher-priced CPUs and letting the Semprons drop off, would not be popular in some markets. Right now AMD is selling everything they can make. I'm afraid it might get to the point where customers (OEMs) are on allocation for processors in Q3. I can already guess that it will happen with AM2 socket processors.

They have to keep their customers happy. Their customers want to know that supply is fine. Perhaps that's why we're seeing the price increases: to adjust supply to lower area die (Semprons, single core).

Now, I admit that this is something we would be unable to discern from our vantage point. But it might be the situation AMD is actually in. Buggi noted the supply problems in Q4 last year. Q3 and Q4 this year may turn out to be tighter than that.
