Why Hollywood doesn't need the heartland

I do believe that could be re-written with the headline Why Republicans don't need the conservatives

Similar plot.

If there's money on the table, someone will come along to take it. That someone may get so good at it they may just take Hollywood's share.

So here's the bad news: Hollywood doesn't need the Heartland anymore.

yeah, but it says the business model falls apart at budgets 70 million and above.

what's the average cost of a studio film? 50 Mil? The majors can't afford to make niche product and survive as currently constructed.

They will either have to change their product to appeal to a larger audience -- something I'm not sure they can do; after all, they haven't been trying to lose money the last five years or so -- or change their business model.

They already have their classic divisions, which have essentially sucked up the independent product. If they can't compete, they buy, eg. the Weinstein Brothers, Miramax.

all roads lead to the majors and creative, left-wing, group-think death, as the system is currently constructed.

Hopefully downloads will kill Hollywood, and sooner rather than later.
