So, they fought for land, resources, slaves and the pleasure of eating the vanquished. When the British arrived, the violent Maori culture continued unabated, but with other interests complicating matters, such as getting loads of loot from the settlers by selling land, from trade and employment - such as the fun of having a musket, a pay packet and going to kill some of the damned opposition tribes who needed a bit of utu. The treaty of Waitangi worked fairly well while it was tribal Maori culture but these days, we are rapidly all turning into Maoris by miscegenation, so the silly apartheid concept [which both parties had for property, though neither had from a genetic point of view, lustily interbreeding being very popular] didn't have much hope. People still try to pretend that there are tribes and there are, but it's a silly concept and really is just becoming a bunch of incorporated investment societies with a cash flow providing the impetus, with some familial familiarity as most families have. The most enthusiastic "Maoris" are born-again Maoris who look very much European and indeed, one case had the genealogist of the South Island tribe having zero Maori in him but being a very important "Maori". It's more about the money these days and you see various Maoris swanking around on the tribe's money. Same as with Europeans. That's the nature of self-dealing power seekers, whether in government or tribes = much the same thing = kleptocratic wasteful collectivist serfdom with those on the take doing well while those at the bottom of the heap don't.
