The Catholic Church banned interest for centuries through the Renaissance. Jews were given special standing in communities because they could act as bankers (at least until some whackos decided to have a pogram.) The Medici financed the High Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and were considered sinners as a result. But no one cut off their hands or heads, and the West ultimately created the Enlightenment, the USA, and the Industrial Revolution.

I don't think the Islamic world was ever capable of producing Medicis...
