Your mention of the "good ol' days" is very closely examined in Robert Bork's book, Slouching Towards Gomorrah: Modern Liberalism and American Decline, a book well worth the time to read... I agree with him completely, and I recommend the book, it's one of the best I've read...

Bork discusses many topics in his book, and he devotes a large segment comparing the treatment of our soldiers in WWII and those returning from Vietnam... he explains that after WWII, we became spoiled as a society, that the WWII baby boomers were spoiled, they had everything and grew into the radical left of the 60's... this movement shook the conservative institutions and these institutions were not able to push it off, so they eventually caved in to the "barbarians." These extreme leftist radicals have taken over politics in our country and this is the cause of the decline we witness today...

With throwbacks like Hanoi john and his ilk, it becomes very clear how accurate Bork really is...
